WHAT HAPPENED

Steve Portnoy and I hauled in a table-full of vintage computer gear from the 80's and showed them off. Basic computers featuring on/off and momentary contact switches, status lights, hand wired circuit boards and no monitor or keyboards to some of the first hard drives and 8 inch floppy drives. His first computer case measured some 20 x 20 x 20 inches and was crafted form 1/16 inch steel. Even empty, it weighed in at about 35 pounds. The most impressive visual comparison was a 5 MB hard drive that was 5 ½ inches wide, 3 inches thick, and about 8 inches deep up against a 1 GB flash drive that was smaller that a single cell pen light. That all happened in May.

In June, I briefed on the current status of the latest trend in computing, Dual Processor Chips from both AMD and Intel. Most of the discussion concentrated on why and what you would be using these new CPU's for and how much it will cost you to build a new machine. I have included the power point show that you can see. Just click the zip file link dual processor.zip to save to your disk.Double click on the file to extract, and then start the power point viewer and choose the ppt file.

WHAT'S GONNA' HAPPEN

Our July meeting will have to be delayed a week to the 16th. I'll be in Colorado for the first couple of weeks. I'll give you an update on how far along I am building my new dual processor computer and what ever else seems to be interesting at that time.

WHERE’S IT GONNA’ HAPPEN?

We meet in the Computer Lab at Chestnut Memorial United Methodist Church on Harpersville Road in Newport News. Our doors are always open to new members and visitors, too. Meetings are held each month at 10:00 AM on the second Saturday. Discussions are lively and provide useful information on how to get the most out of your computer hardware and software. Please join us for our next meeting. Guests are always welcomed. Bring a friend along the next time so you can both share the unique experiences at our meetings.

Our “start-up” group meeting for those new to computers and Windows meets an hour prior to the monthly meeting. If you need additional information or encouragement; please call me at 898-1679 or 898-3855.
