Colorful Places

I have recently resettled in Virginia Beach. In searching for some color in the form of houseplants I had a couple of colorful adventures.

In Chesapeake I visited Pine Ridge Perennials on Pine Forest Lane. It was a long ride on a rainy day - one of the few this month. The gardens are between Routes 168 and 17 off Benefit Road. It seemed a very long trip following the mapquest.com directions. Think I could find an easier route!

The gardens at Pine Ridge Perennials are grand. Planted over four acres, they are filled with colorful daylilies, lilies and many other varieties of riotous color. There are over 850 varieties of daylilies and range in price from $5.00 to $150.00.

As luck would have it, the rain stopped just after arriving - all but my feet were dry! It was a lovely outing of an afternoon. Janet and John Hong developed this colorful place from their rural home - or once rural. They are being slowly surrounded by McMansions. Call 757 421-0097 or email prpdaylily@cox.net before planning a trip. I plan to visit again when the Oriental Lilies are in bloom.

My decorating ideas are often started by a color. Decided I wanted a purple plant to put into a purple vase. I saw an orchid that I liked, but did not purchase it. Thought to learn more about orchids before purchasing. I searched round online and then decided I should work on The Umbrella. The first article I proofed mentioned a TUG member that raised orchids! Aha! I emailed John Hubard and was invited to visit his greenhouse. John has plants galore in addition to his orchids in his Virginia Beach garden.
I am now the proud possessor of several orchid plants! In addition I have filled the porch with plants to provide a haven in the heat!

Last but not least Bonsai have entered the mix. Hope I have not overdone it and will need to spend lots of time keeping all the plants thriving!

To connect with computers I mention that both John Hubard and the Hongs use Access databases to keep track of their inventories! I do not need a database - yet!
