South Hampton Roads User Group
(SHRUG) The recent passing of two of our members, Richard Smith and James Gonos, has saddened the club. Richard served the club in several capacities over the last few years. At a time when it seemed almost impossible to put together a nomination slate, Richard's determination revived the spirit of volunteerism in the club. A good group of officers was presented and elected. It was a turn-around point in club leadership. He also served as chairman and led a Special Interest Group on the many aspects of the Internet.
We welcomed visitor Margaret Rogers to our meeting. Of course we invited her to become a member. A hearty welcome back was given to Kim Lewandowski, chairperson of the membership committee. Kim had been recuperating from surgery. She reported that we have 49 members. There is a possibility that several lapsed memberships will be renewed.
The annual picnic was held after a brief September meeting. Many thanks are due Art Thiemens, the committee and the many volunteers who made the picnic a success. We had the opportunity to converse with each other in a relaxed setting.
The club door prizes that are a part of each monthly meeting may be in store for some changes. Walt Saunders, door prize chairman, and the steering committee are looking for ways to enhance the prizes. The idea of having one big prize, such as a scanner or a read/write drive, once a quarter instead of a lot of small items each month is being discussed. The prizes at the September meeting were: Microsoft Streets 2002, business software, label maker for CD/DVD, multi-purpose paper and Kodak Picture Paper.
Our monthly programs are open to everyone. We meet at 10 a.m. on the second Saturday of the month at the Portsmouth campus of Tidewater Community College in Suffolk.
